Marvel's Wonder Man Trailer Reveals The MCU's Most Self-Referential Series To Date

The Marvel studio is aware that audiences might be experiencing some superhero fatigue, so they've opted to incorporate this exact concept into their next superhero show.

That's right, the debut preview for Wonder Man has been released, and it pledges a meta twist on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The trailer, which premiered on Oct. 10, also quietly pushed the Wonder Man launch date later from its initial late 2025 window into January 2026.

Why one more superhero film? People is weary of superheroes. Why go see them in the theater? Wonder Man resonated with me on a deep level. There is an opportunity to surprise audiences. To reinvent the whole genre of storytelling.

The reporter responds: "Have you given any thought about the cast?"

The trailer then cuts to series star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's viewing the interview on his mobile device, and the preview concludes.

What We Know About Wonder Man

We were previously aware that Wonder Man would be a meta take on the MCU. The series stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the character Simon Williams, a Hollywood actor who becomes a super-powered being (the hero Wonder Man).

The rest of the cast features actor Ben Kingsley returning as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (also known as Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's agent Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed coming back as Department of Damage Control agent P. Cleary.

Marvel's Meta-Humor Approach

We don't know much else about the storyline of Wonder Man, but it's clear that the studio intends to laugh at its own tropes.

In the aftermath of Deadpool & Wolverine, it appears like the production company is all in on self-referential comedy. Will this approach succeed without the star power of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman? We'll have to wait and see.
