The UK Foreign Office has included an additional eleven new nations to its public warning roster concerning the threats of industrial alcohol poisoning from adulterated beverages.

This expanded warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the number of documented incidents" of methanol toxicity.

Just last month, authorities had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, after multiple serious incidents like the tragic demise of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that even tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can result in vision loss or death within 12–48 hrs.

What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Industrial alcohol is a harmful industrial alcohol often employed in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. It is not intended for ingestion.

Although it is generated during the manufacture of beverages, reputable manufacturers lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the refining procedure.

However in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into spirits to cut costs, and because it is flavorless and smell-free, it is very difficult to identify.

Official Advice for Travellers

Foreign Office minister a senior official emphasized that every traveler should be aware of the signs of industrial alcohol toxicity.

"When you are consuming alcohol overseas, opt for trusted places and avoid homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," Falconer said.

"If something seems unusual, for example a hangover that's much more severe than typical or vision problems – get medical help fast."

The entire roster of nations noted as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
